Lecture by Dr. Josef Mestenhauser on his personal reflections on the events in the year 1948 and their consequences as part of the Czech and Slovak Cultural Center of Minnesota’s 2010-2011 lecture series “Shifting landscapes: Examining the past, present, and future of the Czech & Slovak Republics.” This lecture and discussion series provides historical, contemporary, and personal perspectives on critical issues in the Czech and Slovak Republics. The focus on these countries is intended not only for people of Czech and Slovak background, but for anybody interested in the role of small nations in world politics and economics, in social and cultural change of epic proportions, on development of democracy on the tail of two of the most notorious dictatorships, and on efforts in Europe to create new security arrangements, such as those of NATO and the European Union.
